Chapter 14

My agreeing to go to the party also included my consent for Amy to choose what I wore. They knew more about fashion than I did, which was obvious if you looked at the two of us standing next to each other. It was even more obvious when you stepped into their giant walk-in closet.

I went over to their place because my closet only had black funeral dresses and T-shirts for the non-funeral days. I also wanted to get out of Richter since I’d spent all of yesterday and most of today worrying about Milo, and Amy’s house was always a safe space. It was much bigger than our apartment, and it was emptier. In a good way. Fewer bodies, dead and alive. Amy’s parents were divorced, and their dad lived abroad, so it was just Amy and their mom here.

“I’m going to embrace your whole emo vibe but make it fashionable,” they said, flipping through the items in their closet like we were out shopping. Amy would pull out an item and examine it with a pursed lip before shaking their head and returning it to its place. Finally, Amy pulled out one of their pairs of torn black high-waisted jeans. “This is so you.”

I took the pants from them and closely examined the size of the rips. “I can fit my whole arm through this one,” I said and did it to prove my point.

“The bigger the better. Plus, with those, you can still stick to a T-shirt—just do a French tuck and it’ll look purposeful,” they said.

“You’ve never worn these. You never would wear these. Why do you even have them?”

“You have to be prepared for anything. I’ve saved these jeans for this exact moment.”

“For the moment I agree to come to Warren’s party after an argument, so I have to wear whatever you tell me to?”

“That was literally the exact scenario. I’ve actually been planning this for weeks.”

I laughed. “Fine.” I had given up all control, but it was a relief to be at Amy’s house having fun with them, to give my mind a reason to stop thinking about Milo or Richter for once.

“I don’t even know what you’re supposed to do at these parties,” I admitted, jumping into Amy’s jeans. I literally had to do several hops to get them on me. Amy’s hips were about as wide as mine, but my butt made the last few tugs a struggle. The jeans rode up on me and instantly made me feel self-conscious. The skin on my left leg was entirely visible through the giant hole.

“Get into drunken fights,” Amy said.

“Definitely not.”

“Fine. No fights. We’ll just smoke some weed instead.” Amy shrugged.

“Amy!”

“I’m kidding! I know you don’t smoke. We can just go and hang out. Watch how ridiculous people get the drunker they get. Last year it was a blast.” That was exactly what Peter had said.

“I don’t even know what pot smells like,” I told them.

Amy laughed. “Oh, you’ll know after tonight.” Amy had been to a few more parties than me in their lifetime.
